Philornithology, Correction

Upon checking, it seems that, according to the pharmacists, there actually was a flu vaccine in Lebanon for winter 2008, but "it was all sold out as early as September". (Possibly because of the Hajj, precisely?) I remember now: this is why I couldn't get it.
One odd detail though : according to european media, "the flu vaccine was available for sale early NOVEMBER".
So... about our fine hajjis, what did they use to protect themselves, before going to mingle with the world's crowds?
If I believed in utopias, I'd recommend our Ministry of Health promptly open a nitpicking investigation about this matter. Ha ha ha, yes, good one. Like all our governors, they're far too busy studying the possible harmful effects on citizens' health of all those counterfeit films and softwares swarming our fine country. That crap is deadly, you know.
"Beware of imitations, demand the reliable original quality."
They've already used the slogan for a poster campaign about medications, so the citizens will soon recognize it.
I did say "poster campaign". They handed colorful pretty posters to all the pharmacies. That's about it.
But then, how do you spot a dangerous fake drug? No worries, good people, it's clearly explained on the poster.
It's cheaper? Nope.
The box looks different? Try again.
The pharmacist looks seedy? Missed, play another turn.
It's missing the official hologram? You're freezing! Wrong, all wrong.
I'm gonna have to tell you myself, won't I?
It's the one with pills shaped like a rifle bullet : === (__|__>
Good thing the posters are very clear and explicit. Now, that's what I call a good information campaign.
So keep your eyes peeled, both of 'em!
Ah, if only our pilgrims had gotten suspicious about those weird dagger-shaped syringes, today I wouldn't be pathetically sick.
Actually, since this morning I'm feeling better. But I love getting the sympathy. Chocolate boxes still welcome.
(Yes, the appetite's better too, how did you guess?)

Achtung FälserInen, verstehenlich? Comprende? Piratados esta dangeroso, oui? Avanti baby, let's go.
Mais j'adore me faire plaindre.

Philornithology

This is winter, and I'm sick as an impure canine. It seems the Mecca pilgrims this year brought back with them a couple of nasty epidemic viruses. (sigh) I *so* hate crowds, don't you? Terribly unhygienix, like eating stale fish.
Could be the flu. Looks like it, and I didn't find the flu vaccine in Lebanon this winter, so... :-(
But speaking of winter in Lebanon, I'm reminded of a couple stories.

Fertilizer :
During a terribly cold winter, a half-frozen sparrow fell from its branch in the middle of the road, and felt it was going to die. A horse passed by, and dropped a big dung that fell right over the sparrow without even noticing it. The dung was warm, and soon the sparrow felt alive again. It even had food all around! So happy was the bird, that it begun singing. A fox on the prowl heard it, pulled it out of the dung by a leg, dusted it off a bit, and swallowed it just like that.
There are several morals to this story :
- When you're in deep s***, things could always be worse.
- Not everybody who puts you in deep s*** means harm to you.
- Not everybody who gets you out of deep s*** is doing you a favor.
- If you're in deep s***, eat and shut up!

Not that there's any hinting towards Lebanese politics and daily life...
Right, another one.

Mecanary :
A man is telling his friend :
"Yesterday, I accidentally dropped my gasoline lighter in the canary's cage. Crazy critter drank it all. Then started hoppity-hopping in circles non-stop, for hours, like some friggin' machine. Suddenly, it stopped, and fell stiff at the bottom of the cage.
- Cardiac arrest?
- No. Out of gas."

I'm a bit like that. When I'm very tired, I tend to get hyperactive, mostly in talk. (This makes me different from little children!) Then I run out of what I call, in pilot vocabulary, "my gasoline fumes", and suddenly I'm like dead.
For instance, right now, I'm all out of fumes. So good night y'all, and to all a merry Halloween. Beep-beeeeoooowwwwp......

Beep-beeeeoooowwwwp......

Bip-biiiioooowwwwp......

Hi-tech priorities...

Okay, I confess, at times I do hear a little local news, and I even give in and listen. I know, I have no willpower. But let's move on.
Two consecutive news bits from yesterday evening's 8 o'clock:
- The inhabitants of several villages in the Bsharreh region are complaining that they've been left completely without power for days now. The last snowfall mercilessly brought down the cables of our national electrical network, which is completely rotten (about as much as our political class, that's saying something!). Already, the rationing which I've been boringly droning about, is because the overall electricity production in this country is about one third below our needs. But said needs sometimes increase (for instance: air conditioning in the summer)... and the network seldom runs at 100%, there are always breakdowns or shortages. Hooray.
- Next news, the Government proceeded to the public destruction of 100,000 bootleg CDs and DVDs confiscated throughout the country, in the presence of representatives of the international companies whose copy rights were being so merrily fornicated. A bulldozer went back and forth over all those discs, in spite of the fact that they were already quite flat in the first place, while we were being explained that cracking down on counterfeiting of movies, softwares and musics was an essential condition for our lovely and fine country joining the WTO.
I'm sure all those shivering mountain folks are brightening their faces with a large shivering grin, gathered around their candles, when they hear those great news on the coal-powered telly. [And these evening news can also be heard on the radio.] The WTO, how about that! Ah, they must be so happy.
Tremble, China, India and Brazil, for Lebanon is entering the world stage of progress!!!
Uh... and what if the Majors sponsored our juice, so we could CONSIDER watching their superb, gold-priced, official DVDs?
Forgive me, I felt like saying something utterly idiotic as a conclusion. Sorry...
P.S.: I had to try twice before managing to post this rant online. My 2.9 kilobytes/second internet is a real jalopy. ):-P

My bloody Valentine

If this blog had existed 4 years ago (uh... correction : 3 years and 11 months ago), I probably would've told you, with lots of emotion and excitement, about the Cedar Revolution. Remember, 4 years ago, how the world seemed to be shaking? After a tsunami in Asia that got its little 15 minutes of fame, tyrannies were shaken one by one. The Orange Revolution, the Tulips Revolution, the Cedar Revolution... All this huge and wild hope of independance and justice that tsunamised Ukraine, Georgia, Burma, Tibet, Lebanon...

And today it all came true! Excuse me? Have I been following the news about Georgia lately? No, why? Ah? Well, all right, let's skip that. And Ukraine? Again no, but is it... You think so? Ah well, okay. Let's forget about Ukraine.
But we still have Lebanon! I beg your pardon? No. You know, myself, the national newscasts, they bore me to death. Oh yeah, wait, I did hear a little something.
Very well then, let's drop those fantasies of tyrannosismic Revolutions.

It's true, 47 months ago, I too dared defy the fear of the Syrian oppression, of 15 long lead-heavy years, for the first time in my life (and also the last, bah) I went to a demonstration. Rafiq Hariri murdered, that does it, Syria out!

And Syria outed indeed. Yaaaay, at last! A free and unified Lebanon would finally become a genuine country, and not an umpteenth banana republic any more. Or date republic, in the Middle East. Well, awright, the national production is mainly apples. An apple republic it is, then, to stand out from the lot. Anyhow, at last unity and equity.
Yeah, sure! Dream on. Here, have a puff of ganja, man. Count on it and drink national mineral water Sohat®, but don't hold your breath too long.

Wouldja haf beleft it, that since the beginning of our self-management, the mess, the corruption, the public money wasting... and the electricity! have been worse than ever. That tops it all! As for unity... ha! ha! ha! Excuse me while I pick myself up from the floor. [brush, brush] Our political class, since that fine day of sunny unity and great weather, has been more divided than ever.

Well, down to the point, the big bang which changed our national destiny (ever so slightly, in the end!) was 4 years ago. And our forlorn quest for madeleines muffins (read Marcel Proust), the International Tribunal for this assassination, generously funded at great expense by our meager national finances deeper in debt than California, is finally coming true. Wulululululuuuuuu!

4 years of investigation! I'm not sure even the search for Jack the Ripper took that long. What's that you say? He was never found? My bad. John F. Kennedy, then? Okay, let's pretend you didn't hear me say that.

But still... The 4 main "suspects" (what a big word), the 4 generals that headed the special "security" services in our country during the Collaboration with the Syrian colonizer, are tucked and comfy in prison since that time. Firmly indicted with... with... with what, again? Hold on while I check. Ah, there we are : indicted with... NOTHING! For 4 years.

Dammit shit, we got nothing to blame them for? What about collaboration with the occupant in oppressing their own people? Well, yeah, but, no, but... the topic of the Collaboration years, it's like Pandora's Box sealed with Solomon's Mark, it's like the urn that Sinbad fished out of the sea with a Jinn inside, it musn't be opened, NO! not even set ajar, you fool!

So, how about prosecuting them for assassination, or accessory to it, in the Calculus Affair, I mean, the Hariri Affair? (Apologies, sometimes I get it all mixed up, the Temple of the Sun suicides, the Beirut Boom-Booms, the abduction of Sydney Flight 714...)

But here's the thing : forasmuch as we're very happy with the freedom to publicly call the whole Assad lineage wild boars in public, about the assassination, there's something that looks like a tiny hitch.
The indiction file against the 4 generals seems about as packed with overwhelming evidence as the EDL tanks with fuel-oil and the national treasury chests with gold-standard dollars. And as for Syria, I might not be intimate with the gods, or even the half-gods of Mount U.N., but nevertheless, there are some secrets whose guards salaries are at no risk of getting the Sphinx bankrupt.

Walk this way, you'll soon understand what I mean.

- Since at least the affair of the Castafiore's Jewe... I mean, the affair of Saddam, when Assad Jr bet on the losing camel, Saint Bush-Mouthed Chrysostom decreed in his fatwas that Damascus was no more on the road to Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre, but on the road of Hell. I think his exact words were "the ratchet of the axis of Evil". OK? OK! Next.

- One of the most (in)famous fatwally farty fatwas, was the decree that Saddam Hussein must fall (with a rope around his neck, naturally) for he was a weaponsmith of massive destructions, who lended his naughty toys to BinLulu, the same one who had "borrowed" 4 airliners for a hooligan's joyride before scrapping then into the scenery, damaging along the way a couple of very expensive skyscrapers, one polygon-shaped masterpiece of military architecture, and causing almost as many all-American casualties as the war against that bastard Abu-Udai... who turned out to be innocent, at least of what he was being accusationified! Colin Powell's Anthrax was icing sugar, the mobile chemical lab trucks were 100% organic, and the wicked Osama came a-ridin' along rawhide only after the ruddy mess was well set in Baghdad.

- So, Saddam Hussein was blasted into orbit without the tiniest existing proof of what he had allegedly done but the world was only half convinced about.

- While Syria, let's be honest, apart from Hassan Nasrallah, Yasser Arafat, Muhammad Ahmadi Najad and Mullah Omar, pretty mych everybody was positive about its guilt in the Hariri bombing. And heroica America really dislikes its President-Doctator-Specialist in Ophtalmology. So then... when are we redesigning Syria, Kabul-Baghdad style? Yo, Dubya, I've axed you a questshun, ya brave lonesome cowboy! We're not nuking it at all? Hunh. Howboutthat.

Let's sum it up, in a nut-shell. Saddam got blasted, then hung, for crimes more than unsure, with as evidence, nothing.
So, about this equally americanly incompatible Syria, and already guilty as sin for the public opinion, it means as evidence they have... less than nothing?
Looks like it.

Not surprising that Comrade Doctor Fighter Bashar be repeating once a week (in average) that "Syria is not concerned about the International Tribunal". It's not contempt. It's tranquillity.
With NOTHING, Saddam was executed, the heined justified means most extreme. But Syria barely received sideways glances from Washington.

What about Iran? Is there something worth mentioning, or is their Uranium no worse than my aunt's Yellow Cake? (By the way, my aunt's golden-yellow cake is delicious, I absolutely recommend it!)
And where in the world are Osama BinLaden and Carmen Sandiego hiding? So many questions...
Shucks. I really hadn't planned on spending Valentine's day with a headache. So much for cuddling tonight with Honey-Bunny.
Besides, there is no Honey-Bunny. Just a pussy on my lap. Purr.

Bibiche? Honey-Bunny? Pussy Galore? Justine Powers? Sheila Holmes? Duchesse Nukem? Clara Sprotch? Carmen Sandiego? Fatima BinLaden? Lisa Harvey Oswald? Jenny Everywhere?

RIEN! Depuis 4 ans.

On dirait.

Ron-ron.

Pirates of Somalia

Perspective...
I've just been watching an in-depth investigation on those Somalian pirates.
Now, there's no doubt they are a brazen mafia of faithless lawless bandits. Everybody's immediate reflex, including mine, is that you'd want to see them eradicated, or at the very least all jailed and the key thrown away, who the fuck do these guys think they are?
But...
Have they ever killed anybody? Not that I know of. They steal, they ransom, but they are far less evil than terrorists.
And there is one thing. One recurrent theme when they are interviewed.
One thing that allows for this piracy problem is how utterly lawless Somalia is. But it's a double-edged weapon. Many of these pirates, met separately, tell the same story: that they were once fishermen, then huge foreign industrial fishing ships came, looted all the resource, and they were left unable to eat from an honest job, so they turned to piracy. [Reminds me of a Gibran story about the unemployed man turned bandit...] They also display a systematic attitude of very angry contempt for "the international community".
Well, I find this story of theirs all too believable. How hard is it to imagine industrial fishing companies coming to that lawless place's territorial waters, practicing notorious environmentally destructive and vastly short-term profitable fishing, and then leaving with the certainty that poor Somalia doesn't have the ghost of a hope of legally suing them? How many other places have been completely ravaged by rogue fishing?
Today, the pirates are definitely not going to return to a much harder and less profitable activity like fishing, even if the sea resource were to regenerate with time (and maybe it already has, there are dolphins doing very well in the area).
But what part of responsibility does the soulless capitalist West bear in creating this evil that's now biting its butt?
I don't have all the answers. But I have my suspicions.
Maybe the world trade getting hit right where it hurts is just ironic justice. With, as usual, many innocent collateral victims.
"Evil is ignorant." Too much awful harm is done by just "not thinking". And this, coming from the known living species that's most apt for thinking. How embarrassing.
And how much evil originating from Lebanon was spawned by the selfish former imperialist countries? The West created the State of Israel, causing the lingering problem of the Palestinian refugees, which was directly responsible for the war in my country. Sometimes I can understand what might motivate a terrorist. Not excuse it, because I know better. But I understand how such things get started: someone doesn't think, hurts another, who in turn doesn't think, and the victim turns tormentor, and violence spirals downwards into madness.
Nothing's all black and white, not even in the former Apartheid regime of South Africa which tried very hard to separate the colors.
Shades of grey. Everything we do has consequences, and brings responsibilities. An eye for an eye. Where's the straw, where's the beam? Who cares? Everybody has something to clean up from their own peepers before playing lecturing saints to the rest of the "savage" world.
Not even in the mood to end with a joke. Can't see a funny side in this.
Help welcome in dem comments, me hearties.

Shades of grey / Nuances de grisLa perspective...
